Motivational speaker Mark Agnew reveals how focusing on intrinsic goals can make you happier and more resilient, drawing insights from extreme adventure and personal growth
Are you truly happier than a medieval peasant? Consider their lives: constant physical hardship, disease, death, and the risk of being sent to war for a lord they’d never surpass. Today, we have comfort: heated homes, air conditioning, abundant food, technology, and the chance to climb the career ladder. And yet, many of us feel stressed, lonely, and unfulfilled.
Why?
Happiness=expectations-reality
Medieval peasants expected little, so they were content. We, however, are bombarded by social media, seeing others on luxurious holidays or achieving wealth and success, making our expectations balloon while our reality feels static.
The solution lies in intrinsic motivation—judging success on your own terms rather than by external measures - it forms one of the pillars of my motivational keynote talk. On my expedition kayaking the Northwest Passage, the goal was to complete the route, but my personal measure of success was experiencing nature fully, building camaraderie, and challenging myself. Regardless of whether I reached the end, I knew I had succeeded by my own standards.
This principle applies to work and life: when you define success for yourself, your happiness is no longer dependent on comparisons. You become more resilient, grounded, and fulfilled. By focusing on what truly matters to you, happiness becomes a state of being, not a distant goal.
Whether you’re seeking personal growth, resilience, or a mindset shift, embracing intrinsic motivation is a transformative step.
